Rita the Rebel / Cantakerous Chicken

There always has to be that one chicken that can't behave.  Meet "Rita the Rebel."

Or as Hubby calls her, "Biker Chick."
She is faster than speeding light, quicker than lightning, and disliked by many.   And she can escape the chicken run without anyone noticing.

We've spent many evenings doing the chicken chase.

She refuses to be in the coop at night.  Absolutely, downright, refuses to go in after a day out.

A biker calls a car a "cage" and prefers the freedom of a motorcycle.  They don't want to be "caged" in.  Hence, Hubby's nickname for who I call Rita.  She is arrogant and a pain in the rump.

As Hubby was re-watering them the other night (their water froze), Rita ran right out in a split second.   Getting her in the coop the night before that was another story.  I tricked her by dropping treats all the way to the barn, and yet that little stinker ran right out between my legs.

Later, that same night, I somehow (out of breath from the chase), got ahold of her tail.

Hubby left her out after she escaped again.  I told that chick if she wanted to be fox food, to go right ahead.

I found her early morning in the old big barn, just happy as a peach.  Hm.  Should I just leave her be?  Nope.  The chase will be back on later.  I can't have her bringing in raccoons, owls, fox, and other varmints.  Even though she makes me so mad....

I tend to favor the cranky ones in the animal world. They have so much more personality than the more docile and well behaved. But then, I'm not the one who has to chase them down. :)
Vicki, I have not only have one naughty chicken, but two pups that test the waters with me often.

Lol..I love your description, though I'm sure it's not all that funny to have to chase her!! Can you leash her? I guess that wouldn't work!!! :)
Rain, she was left out all night, but met me at the hay when feeding the goats. She decided it wasn't a good idea to be out in freezing cold, snowing, windy weather. I hope she grows out of her defiant attitude, ha ha!

Lol...when the dogs get defiant, we always say they are reverting back to the "terrible two's" - I guess Mom's can relate! :)

There's always one, isn't there? I have one that prefers the ducks but then decides that she wants to be a chicken after dark - usually after I have not noticed that she's hiding behind the duck house and close the chicken coop. PIB.

Susan, your comment made me laugh.
Katmom, she definitely has an attitude, lol!

There's always one, isn't there. LOL
The only way I know of to deal with an animal like that, chicken or otherwise, is put ALL food and water where you want them to be, and NOTHING anywhere else.
And with a chicken, make sure her wings aren't clipped so she can fly to safety if she needs to.
Other than that, I don't believe there's a way to win with her.
Prayers everyone is safe in the storm hitting the northeast. We had it Sunday, and it went on up the coast.
God bless.

Apples and Tomatoes Oh My!

The early morning weather here has been downright chilly.  One morning it was 42 degrees.  Flower beds have been weeded.  The herb garden is next in line, but I do need to figure out what to do with all the rosemary plants I planted in the actual vegetable garden.  I have not mastered keeping them alive all winter indoors.  They will not survive the winter if left outside. Did any of my blog writing followers locate a better "blog" platform online?  Just curious if anyone is moving from blogger.

Under the Weather ~ What's Growing?

I have not been around in blogland much, due to being under the weather after I pushed myself way to far one day.  I have to remember we cannot do it all in one day.  Thank goodness for teas and tinctures, and healing foods (and rest).  We are feeling better. As for our blogs being used for advertising on many websites, and so forth (I can't see any other reason for the source of views: howstuffworks, dominospizza, mayoclinic {not the blog readers interested in my actual blog}) the numbers continue to climb.  I have not found a way to "opt" out either.  If any of you find a new way to avoid this, blog elsewhere, find a new platform etc, please be sure to share.   If your blog has ads, you are are not going to complain, ha ha!  You are probably making a bucko-bucks with all these visitors to your blog. Okay, back to the update post . . .

16 Weeks Until Christmas

It's not hard to believe that we are traveling closer to the winter holidays.  I'm trying to focus on enjoying every single day until then, but I am fitting in a few snippets of holiday preparing.  Christmas is my favorite holiday of the year.  It's hard to believe it's the last day of August. I have not yet gotten rid of the links to all the advertisers using my blog posts, but again, still working on it. However, my profile has gone from my blog, and while I am in settings, it is not able to add as a "gadget" to the blog.  Weird things are happening.   Google had a data breach recently as well, so gmail users were advised to change passwords.  Not sure what else is going on, but just in case you are wondering why my "profile" is not on my blog any longer.   Okay, back to the Christmas countdown post . . .
