Homemade Bagels

We've been having weird weather again.   It's cold, cloudy, raining and a few spurts of hail.  We do not need more rain, but my garlic loves it.

I was a bit flabbergasted yesterday morning, when I realized I had nothing to blog about (other than the weather).  One daughter joked she would do something funny, but sadly got on the school bus and left.

There I was, staring into cyberspace, sucking down strong coffee, attempting to will myself into a long walk on the treadmill, when it hit me - bagels.

I have had a draft on my blog for over a year I have wanted to make them and never had the time or energy, so Thursday was the day.  It was raining (of course) and my day was mostly indoor work with slip sloshing around outdoors with the pups.

Perfect solution to a gray day.  I had planned leftovers for dinner, had most of my regular chores done, so off to the kitchen I went.

I could not, for the life of me, find the recipe I saved in my bookmarks.  I ended up trying the "New York" recipe I found by googling homemade bagels.  I want to try the King Arthur recipes too, but decided on this one first.

I used my dehydrator for the rising of the dough again.  I love this trick when the house is a bit chilly yet.

 Before boiling and baking.

Baked.

Enjoyed.

My family is spoiled.  These would be great for breakfast sandwiches too.

I've never attempted bagels. I like them, but hubby thinks they're "too starchy." (Different strokes for different folks.) An attempt at making them probably would have happened by now if we both liked them.

Yesterday was a baking day though. I made plain white bread and almost got an apple cake in the oven. (Just ran out of time.)

Yes, your family is spoiled by all the wonderful food you provide for them. I was kind of tickled a week or so ago when we had company for dinner and the guy told my husband what a lucky, lucky person he was because of the food he was regularly served. (He won points from me, that's for sure!)

Those look so wonderful! There is nothing, IMHO, like a NY bagel. I have to say that even your supposedly uneventful posts are a great read!
Mama Pea, I do like them for breakfast sandwiches, but not everyday. As long as the kids are here, I won't get any in the freezer either. It'll be a special treat once every so often. The ingredients in store brands are terrible. I bet all your meals are scrumptious.
Ha ha! Susan, we do have a knack for funny, interesting and odd posts from our homestead. We just can't make this stuff up. I'm so glad I made them, because it's been one of those things hanging over me for a year. Now I know I can make them, and how long it takes to make.

Ooh nice. I've never tried to make bagels because I'm spoiled by living a few hours from Montreal where bagels just can't be beat. Our local market here gets a bagel delivery each day and by the time I roll out of bed on shopping day, they've disappeared. I'm craving bagels and cream cheese with a little smoked trout now, I'll have to get up earlier next Thursday!

I sometimes get that way blogging too. My blog is private, one one other reader, but if I sit staring at the "new post" button too long, then I just skip the post for the day. If I'm not interested in what I'm writing, I know my friend won't be either!

We have had the same crummy weather! I have always wanted to try making bagels. If this weather keeps up I see another baking project!
Rain, you are lucky to have bakery so close to your home. We live in what I call the "boonies" between cities. One being crowded by college kids and the other known for it's guns, gangs, violence and drugs.
Liz, we may be baking something new again if the weather doesn't get any better. It's been the oddest weather this year.

Every morning, I have a toasted bagel every morning with whipped cream cheese for breakfast with a cuppa tea. It's a habit that I can't seem to break. But why bother. LOL
The weather here is weird too. The sun is shining beautifully, but the wind is gusting probably between 25-35 mph, and it's COLD. The cats want to go out (we have an enclosed rabbit hutch for them on the porch). I take them out. Ten minutes later I have to bring them in cause it's just too darn cold. They don't seem to understand, of course, cause again, the sun is shining. Tonight is suppose to be in the high 20's. I sure hope tomorrow will be warmer for them.
Prayers everyone has a safe happy weekend.
God bless.

RB, bagels are so good. Your weather sounds as crazy as our weather. Stay warm!

Apples and Tomatoes Oh My!

The early morning weather here has been downright chilly.  One morning it was 42 degrees.  Flower beds have been weeded.  The herb garden is next in line, but I do need to figure out what to do with all the rosemary plants I planted in the actual vegetable garden.  I have not mastered keeping them alive all winter indoors.  They will not survive the winter if left outside. Did any of my blog writing followers locate a better "blog" platform online?  Just curious if anyone is moving from blogger.

Under the Weather ~ What's Growing?

I have not been around in blogland much, due to being under the weather after I pushed myself way to far one day.  I have to remember we cannot do it all in one day.  Thank goodness for teas and tinctures, and healing foods (and rest).  We are feeling better. As for our blogs being used for advertising on many websites, and so forth (I can't see any other reason for the source of views: howstuffworks, dominospizza, mayoclinic {not the blog readers interested in my actual blog}) the numbers continue to climb.  I have not found a way to "opt" out either.  If any of you find a new way to avoid this, blog elsewhere, find a new platform etc, please be sure to share.   If your blog has ads, you are are not going to complain, ha ha!  You are probably making a bucko-bucks with all these visitors to your blog. Okay, back to the update post . . .

16 Weeks Until Christmas

It's not hard to believe that we are traveling closer to the winter holidays.  I'm trying to focus on enjoying every single day until then, but I am fitting in a few snippets of holiday preparing.  Christmas is my favorite holiday of the year.  It's hard to believe it's the last day of August. I have not yet gotten rid of the links to all the advertisers using my blog posts, but again, still working on it. However, my profile has gone from my blog, and while I am in settings, it is not able to add as a "gadget" to the blog.  Weird things are happening.   Google had a data breach recently as well, so gmail users were advised to change passwords.  Not sure what else is going on, but just in case you are wondering why my "profile" is not on my blog any longer.   Okay, back to the Christmas countdown post . . .
