Cooler Weather, Rising Food Prices and Homemade Honey Graham Crackers

I love this cooler weather.  We officially started our fall wood splitting last night.  Even though I had a very long day of work and a bazillion "to-do" items on my "to-do" list, I still went out to help.  We are going to need to wood too.

Today I went to the store to get a few items we needed, and looked at the price of wood pellets - a whopping $5.00/bag (40 lb.).  Last year we paid $3.58/bag.  I was absolutely shocked.  Corn was over $6.00/bag and was not affordable last year either (to burn).

I am already baking almost daily, so I will have to figure out more ways to cut down our costs.  Maybe next year we can increase our meat chicken supply, our layers, and possible raise beef.  I am already searching for recipes on making butter with our goat's milk.

Today, I baked homemade graham crackers.  I will need 3 cups of them saved for homemade graham crust pumpkin pies tomorrow.  It's already hard to keep the kids from eating what I need.  I guess I could always make more tomorrow.  These are made from whole wheat flour and raw honey.  Yum.

They look really yummy.I love granola bars in the fall. Just the woody taste of nuts and fruit.
Why do you split your wood so late? We do ours as early as possible in the spring or the fall before so it is good a dry for burning season. Or course I am further north then you.

I'm ready for pumpkin pie! I have two pumpkins sitting on the counter that I need to roast. Your graham crackers look yummy!
Mmmm... graham crackers sound delish.

I'm going to check out this recipe for sure. The Husband has been turning his nose up at whole wheat lately. Any suggestions? He complains it's not as soft. I tell him it's because he is so used to the 'enriched' types of bread sold in stores.

I hope to turn him! LOL... grocery prices aren't going down any time soon, I'm afraid. Still trying to get my fall garden going here-- bought fall onion sets today, plan to get them in the ground in the morning.

Didn't I see you put netting over your sunflowers? I've got to get some of that for our fall garden to be successful. Will TULLE work?

Like you we've got to get wood-- but Honey (the husband) isn't up to cutting it this year--with recovery from the heart attack being slow. Looks like we'll be buying our wood to heat too.

Take care, love reading your blog and all that you're doing.

We are splitting wood so late this year, because it's either been extremely hot or very wet here. We haven't had very many days where it's been in between those extremes. This summer was in the 90's with heat indexes in the 100's.

As for tulle, it may work. This is my first year using cheese cloth.

I wish we had a woodstove, hubby declines :( We always have scrap wood from our trees, and can get free wood thru craigslist from people getting rid of their trees...
The graham crackers look yummy! Love your blog!

Apples and Tomatoes Oh My!

The early morning weather here has been downright chilly.  One morning it was 42 degrees.  Flower beds have been weeded.  The herb garden is next in line, but I do need to figure out what to do with all the rosemary plants I planted in the actual vegetable garden.  I have not mastered keeping them alive all winter indoors.  They will not survive the winter if left outside. Did any of my blog writing followers locate a better "blog" platform online?  Just curious if anyone is moving from blogger.

Under the Weather ~ What's Growing?

I have not been around in blogland much, due to being under the weather after I pushed myself way to far one day.  I have to remember we cannot do it all in one day.  Thank goodness for teas and tinctures, and healing foods (and rest).  We are feeling better. As for our blogs being used for advertising on many websites, and so forth (I can't see any other reason for the source of views: howstuffworks, dominospizza, mayoclinic {not the blog readers interested in my actual blog}) the numbers continue to climb.  I have not found a way to "opt" out either.  If any of you find a new way to avoid this, blog elsewhere, find a new platform etc, please be sure to share.   If your blog has ads, you are are not going to complain, ha ha!  You are probably making a bucko-bucks with all these visitors to your blog. Okay, back to the update post . . .

16 Weeks Until Christmas

It's not hard to believe that we are traveling closer to the winter holidays.  I'm trying to focus on enjoying every single day until then, but I am fitting in a few snippets of holiday preparing.  Christmas is my favorite holiday of the year.  It's hard to believe it's the last day of August. I have not yet gotten rid of the links to all the advertisers using my blog posts, but again, still working on it. However, my profile has gone from my blog, and while I am in settings, it is not able to add as a "gadget" to the blog.  Weird things are happening.   Google had a data breach recently as well, so gmail users were advised to change passwords.  Not sure what else is going on, but just in case you are wondering why my "profile" is not on my blog any longer.   Okay, back to the Christmas countdown post . . .
