The most random yet....Homemade Slaw Dressing ~ Homemade Celery Salt

I revamped the family favorite broccoli salad yesterday.  The original recipe calls for Marzetti Slaw Dressing.

I looked up the ingredients in the slaw dressing and the first ingredient is soybean oil (many salad dressings contain this).  It also contains "corn-cider vinegar."

INGREDIENTS: SOYBEAN OIL, SUGAR, CORN-CIDER VINEGAR, WATER, EGG YOLK, SALT, MUSTARD SEED, XANTHAN GUM, ROSEMARY EXTRACT.
Contains Egg.

We already use an organic/non-gmo safflower mayo, so that part was easy.  Making it ourselves, also cuts our cost.  I used
1 cup organic/non-gmo mayo, 1/3 cup organic sugar, 1 Tbsp. organic mustard, 1/4 cup organic white vinegar, celery salt to taste.  I've never tried this with apple-cider vinegar, but it is easier to find, so I may just try it next time.

I also typically use homemade celery salt.  It's very easy to make.  Dehydrate celery leaves, and with an equal amount of flaked salt.  I store this in a small canning jar in my pantry.

I don't make a lot of the celery salt, so the extra leaves are simply stored separately (for other uses too).

I have also simply diced a small bit of celery and a bit of salt too, when I was out of celery salt (since it was a fresh, cold salad).

I started another rug, and this time, I'm using up all scrap yarns, so the colors are simply "anything goes."  I'll be sure to share it when it's finished.  I have to rephrase myself.  I told you all it was my first rug (yesterday's post), but it's my first yarn rug.  I have made several rag rugs, also crocheted, using strips of recycled bed sheets, pillow cases and other fabric items.

Anyway, I dug out all my small bits of leftover yarn, from dishcloth making days, and whatnot.  I had intentions of making granny squares with them, but decided I don't like using 4 ply cotton for hand towels

...even though they are very pretty.  So stay tuned for the next "scrap" yarn rug.

I am keeping busy in the kitchen, while provisions continue to provide for us.  I mixed up more homemade thousand island dressing for more salads.

We pulled another jar of pizza sauce, and I'm now down to the last one.  It really did help us out for meals, so I'm very thankful I took the time to can it last season.

We are opening the pickles and have only a few more jars left, along with a few jars of relish.

I unburied another "unfinished" treasure.  I started reading this back in May of 2013.  I still have the bookmark in it, but never finished it.  I'm reading this off and on, in between my latest Hemingway book.  In it, I highlighted the words "relaxing is not goofing off."

Its a whopping -3°F today, with a wind chill of -18°F.  School was delayed two hours due to the frigid temperature.  One job today is restocking the porch with wood.  At least the sun is shining today.

What would we do without our pantries? In good times and bad. Having a little bit of company for dinner tonight so pulled Stuffed Green Peppers out of the freezer to serve. What could be easier than that?

We had -20 this morning, up to 6 above now at 9:15. Both wood stoves are corking away with full wood racks next to them. Even some sun shining. Good day for putzing in the kitchen.

Will be eager to see the new crocheted rug!

Great recipe! We love that salad too!
I think I am down to a couple of jars of pizza sauce. Will be making extra jars of that next summer! Stay warm!

Mama Pea, we actually broke another weather record here for February. Sigh.

Liz, when we had a bit of pizza sauce left in the jar, the kids would add a bit to a cheese sandwich with pepperoni, and grill them. Tasted just like pizza too.

I wish I could get as many organic ingredients as you do. Do your stores carry them or do you order online? Wal-Mart is getting better but it still has a long way to go.
I love the celery salt idea...duh...sometimes I don't use the brain God gave me....it's celery and salt.
I love the dishcloth...so pretty!

Sam I am, I can buy almost all of our organic foods at a local grocery store. Only a few items have to be ordered, like elderberries and millet.
