Coconut Oil ~ Virgin

The only thing, until now, that I have used coconut oil for was soap making.  I had read so many bad reviews on it, considering it's pretty solid when room temperature. Hence, I never used it for preparing any types of foods.  Until now.

I purchased a jar of non-gmo/organic virgin coconut oil. This stuff is not cheap either, so I waited until I had a $3 off store coupon for it (while on sale).

What did I use it for?

Well, I got out some of our homegrown popcorn I have been savoring, and used it to pop myself some corn.  I am still so thankful that our very first harvest of popcorn was a good one (and the popcorn is still good two years later).  It gave me two years supply and it is so good.  I can't wait to plant more this year.

I will also be using the coconut oil for skin care recipes.   I know I have new recipes somewhere around here, ha ha!

I am planting the same popcorn this spring, but down the road I would like to try some new types of popcorn.

The weather is warming up a bit, so we are letting the fire go out and giving the stove a good cleaning of the ashes.

Popcorn! And yours being homegrown is the very best! We have a popcorn night planned for tonight. Something we haven't done for a couple of months and we're looking forward to it. We use an air-popper but admit to pouring melted butter over it in the bowl.

I really like coconut oil. The fact that it solidifies at room temperature (or, in my case, very cool temperatures) does mean you have to plan ahead. I found a coconut oil spray in Trader Joe's and I just put it on the stovetop while I'm preheating the oven and then spray my pan. It is wonderful for cooking pancakes!

A few Christmas' ago, "Santa" bought us a counter-top old fashioned looking popcorn machine. It's kind of cool, looks like a smaller version of the movie theater kind. A bugger to clean though. But we spent many hours trying to perfect that movie theater taste and coconut oil was the key for sure! I use it on my lips in the winter before bed for extra moisturizing. With our pets, I get scratched up a lot, and I bruise so easily, I find the coconut oil helps with the healing process. And it's great for removing that sticky adhesive on my nose after I tear off the Breathe Right strips each morning. Lots of wonderful uses in my opinion!

Mmmmm go online and check out all the health benefits of coconut oil. We scramble our eggs with it, use it in making bread, anything calling for butter and just by itself it is wonderful on skin. There are a ton of things it is good for. The virgin stuff is too expensive for soap, so go with the regular for that, but in a pinch or emergency, that will do for culinary endeavors, also.

Mama Pea, I too look forward to a popcorn night. I see that more non-gmo popcorn is available in health stores now, but I'm still going to plant some this year. It is very good.

Susan, I taught one daughter how to make it the other day, and she said, "that smells really good." Ha ha! It does too.

Rain, I am getting some body care books from the library, in hopes to find more uses too. We have a stove top whirley popper, so that is how we make our popcorn.

Teshwooz, I have used it on my skin already and love it. My oldest daughter has used it on her hair too. We do use a cheaper brand for soap making, but right now we do not have goat milk to make it. Hopefully after kidding season we can obtain some.

Wasn't it just 5 years ago or so they were telling us not to eat coconut or palm kernel oil. Now we're suppose to be eating coconut oil?
While I bet it's tasty for baking cakes, cookies, etc., I'll stick to my butter and lard. Course it wasn't that long ago they were telling us those weren't safe either, yet now it is?
Who knows. LOL
God bless.

RB, I still use butter and lard here. I wanted to try it on my popcorn, but that's about all (other than body care) I'll probably use it for.
