Bean Baking Day ~ Canned Grape Jelly

We did not get the 4 1/2 inches of predicted snow.  We did, however, get a layer of freezing rain.  You can see it on my clothesline.  The photo is not the greatest.  The wind was horrible this morning, and still is.

Today, I am baking up 2 lbs. of dry kidney beans, and 3 lbs. of dry black beans.
That is all I can fit into each crock pot.  The goal for me, is to cook these on a wood stove, eliminating electric crock pots all together.

I'm glad I decided to can grape jelly yesterday.  With the crock pots on the counter tops, I don't have much room to work with today.  I still have pinto beans to cook up later.

You can see that my kitchen was very cold.  The steam was very visible on account of the unheated kitchen.  We heat the kitchen from the wood burning stove, which is in an adjacent room.

Canning my own jelly and jams are not only healthier, and less expensive, but another way for us to be self-reliant.  The goal is to make these from fresh grown fruits.  This jelly was made from concord grape juice that did not contain high fructose corn syrup.
Some of you may already do this, but after I sterilize my jars and lids, I place the pot on a hot pad.  We do not have a dishwasher to do this.  When I am done making the jelly, and they are boiling in the canner, I pour the hot water from the pan, into my sink to use for washing my dishes.

The pickings are slim right now, but we'll take anything we are blessed with.  I made a salad and cleaned the beans.  The rain will give us more for a meal in a day or so.  The green beans are every so slowly coming on this season. I made a batch of homemade granola, and instead of my homemade vanilla extract, I used my homemade Christmas Spice Extract.  It smelled so good in the oven, and while cooling.   I picked some purslane, and am doing an experiment with it this time.  Update soon.   Chit Chat ©  August 2026 by Kristina at Pioneer Woman at Heart

I've Been MIA and Heat Wave

First day of July.  It's hot.   I'm definitely not entering a stage of boredom any day soon.  Although I've been doing a lot, it's been productive.  We are in the middle of the worst heat wave I can ever remember.  So humid, there is very little to no work being done in the gardens for the last few days.  Heat index has been up to 106 degrees, and nights did not get any cooler than about  77 degrees.  The heat wave will continue for the rest of the week.  No rain yet. I froze water in small bottles to keep the chickens water cold, and froze treats for them. I canned a small batch of reduced sugar peach jam (before the heat  wave).  I have to admit, it's been very nice to can for two people now.   Enjoyed the last of our asparagus harvest.  The last two stalks were harvested June 29th.  The longest asparagus season we've ever had.  They look light colored, but taking them out of the fridge, they quickly...

Crochet Book Blanket ~ End of Year Update

I started a crochet book blanket at the beginning of this year (2025).  I crocheted a granny square for every book I finished, and crocheted the square with matching colors of the actual book.  The plan was to get back into reading, be motivated by the crocheted blanket, and use up scrap balls of yarn.  An overall fun, and positive project for myself.  The blanket is a join-as-you-crochet type of blanket, making it less intimidating to start, work on, and eventually finish.  How many books did I manage to read? 43 books, with one last book that will be finished on the 31st, will make that final year end number a whopping 44 books! Not the amount I had hoped for, but I really did not have a number goal in mind. It's not a bad number either.   In the past 5 years, I was lucky to even read 1 to 5 books within the years.  There were all sorts of reasons reading didn't happen. On the bright side, the blanket is coming along very nicely, and it is such ...
