While checking the garden I saw one plump shell pea pod. I picked it to see check the size, so I know when to start picking them. We even tasted these gems of goodness. I can't believe I haven't grown them before, but you can't grow everything. Or can you? Hopefully, in a few more days, I'll be blanching our first shell peas for the freezer. I took the pea pod out to the goats, to see if they would like it, but they all turned their noses up.
The berry picking continues. I should have enough to start canning jam. Looks like a dry day today, so maybe weeding will continue. I saw one jalapeno on one plant yesterday, but no green peppers just yet. One zucchini plant is dying. Hopefully the garden will have the chance to completely dry out and catch it's breath.

Homestead Tidbits ~ Canning Radish Relish
Friday, Hubby had to get a required physical, to return to work (always some strings attached in that business), so I headed to the garden. Lots and lots of work out there, so I took a nice big thermos of water, and covered my head with a hat and bandanna. I went out there prepared to sweat.
It is very reassuring to know I don't have to babysit chickens this summer, while I'm running around working.

Just another work day. . .
I overslept this morning, but water is heating now to brew my nettle/oatstraw tea infusion. Coffee is brewing to wake up my sleepy overworked body.
Another batch of cheese is draining this morning too - Fromage Blanc made with goat's milk. We are enjoying it while we have it.
We continue to get more rain, thunderstorms, and wind here. In between, we get spurts of sunshine too.

Humid, Hot, and More Rain
Posting late today, due to those extra duties I have right now, but happy to to get a entire pot of coffee all to myself.
The recent storm brought us much needed rain, but also more weeds. I'm not sure what hurts more, my back or knees. The beets were so bad, I had to weed them out on my knees. Even though I had gloves on, hands are blistered from thistle stabbing me through to the skin.
I picked a few radishes to taste, but they are not all ready yet for harvest for stocking up just yet.

Break Over
I finished a book over my week long break from the internet. And just for the record, I am still reading a Hemingway book.
I ran out of white yarn, and have yet to pick up more. Maybe this week I can.
It was nice to get a break, but reality sets in when the break is over. I'm still weeding through 421 emails. Most of course are just advertisements. I am starting to unsubscribe to many of them this next week.

Nothin' Much....
That sums it up - nothin' much goin' on here that's too exciting. Other than we are crossing a few jobs off the list. The irises are in full bloom right now, but I may have to thin them out next spring.

Cold Spell ~ Stocking Up Stats ~ Vegetarian Caesar Dressing
After discovering we were to have another possible frost last night, we did not plant the last two flats of vegetable plants. Instead the mowing was finished, the goats got to enjoy their grazing time (without sun and heat), and I got the joy of cleaning the toilet. We actually had to put jackets on outside.
I had to dig out old sheets and cover the flowers.

Humidity ~ Wine Cork Herb Markers ~ Goat Capers Continue ~ Dog
Anyone else on a diet of cold fruit, light salads and yogurt? Oh, and healthy popsicles? And iced tea?
The humidity has been so thick, and it really makes gardening uncomfortable. I literally woke up without an appetite. Yesterday's brunch was watermelon.
Today however, it is only going to be in the 60's - camping weather if you ask me. Just gorgeous. I told Hubby we should back up the camper and play hookie. It was tempting for a short few seconds.
Well, that's not happening. Garden duty calls today, and I'll admit, I'd rather work in cool 60°F weather than 80°F and 86% humidity.
I spent a few more rainy days making

Happy Goats ~ Blisters and Backaches
Staking the goats has been successful. I think they look forward to seeing me approach the gate to bring them out now. They get a belly full of goodness, and we get a gas free mower (and cleared land).
Speaking of land. Hubby went guns-blazing with the garden expansion yesterday. He literally wore me out. I put 11,000 steps on my fitbit in garden work alone (by 3pm). I had gone to the garden to plant the onions, but they are still not planted.

More Planting ~ Stake Out
The carrots and beets are now planted. Each row is about 43 feet long. We really need more, but I'm working on that. I got the last two rain barrels in place for the next rainfall as well. I need the water to plant everything else mid-May.
Hubby and I are figuring out the best place to install my new (concord) grape arbor. That is next on the list too.
Remember my new elderberry trees I planted last year? Well, I found another use for them. I read that you can stuff elderberry branches/leaves into mole tunnels to get rid of them. My trees are not really big enough yet, but I do plan to try this if the moles continue to dig tunnels.

Flower Cup Coaster ~ More Gardening
I'm using leftover scrap yarn from crocheting seat cushions, to make these cup coasters in my very few spare minutes of time (which is about a few nights a week now, ha ha).

Rainy, Cold Day Advantage ~ Goat on the Loose
One rainy day, two rainy days, three rainy days, done! The seat cushions are all done. For one table anyway. A few need the ties attached, but we can now enjoy them.
I've also been retouching the paint on my kitchen cupboards. They are getting a good cleaning, and guess what else?

....that word again ~ Random Tidbits
Unfinished.
Maybe it's two words - unfinished projects.
I've gotten too many irons in the fire lately, and need to stop myself and regroup. And I'm only talking about the fun stuff, not the daily to-do list.

Herb Garden Happenings ~ Tidbits
The rain came and went on Monday, so we worked accordingly. I did not, and do not, feel good anyway.
Rain flowed in again Tuesday, but I was able to check in on the herb garden(s). Today, we were to get bad storms early this morning, but we got fog (and a school delay) instead. I was happy with it, as I go to sleep in. Here is what is currently happening (including medicinal herbs) in the herb garden:

Fun Day ~ Tidbits
The younger two were begging to do another "fun" thing while they were on spring break, so Hubby agreed to take them to the zoo. The aquarium was shut down for a large remodel job, and it just re-opened last week.

Crocheted Placemats and Chair Cushions ~ Vultures and Tidbits
I think these placemats will look nice when I finish them all. It will work until I have a day to antique shop for some long tablecloths (in spring colors). I made them as large as our largest dinner plates. The width is good, but I could crochet less rows and still make them fit nicely.

April Already?!
Heavy winter coats are finally going into storage.
Yesterday was absolutely wonderful outside. I filled my clothesline.

Creative Venues ~ Another Birth
If you are wondering about the cut back on usage of electronic and social networks, I have a quick update.
Day one: one child just about had a meltdown, but later used her time to read a library book she has had for a few weeks. Another got out the water color paints and painted these:

Goats ~ Recipes ~ Talking Walls
There is a beautiful sunrise this morning, but I am too lazy to go put on the right slippers to trudge out onto the porch and snap a photo to share. There is a fresh layer of snow to walk through, but it is beautiful.
Although it was almost noon, when I started my deep cleaning yesterday, I was successful again for a day. My day first started with emptying the ash pan in the wood stove, restocking the wood inside, fetching eggs and watering the animals.
When I arrived to the barn, and pushed the door open, I was greated by Misty (our white female Lamancha goat). She was happily walking about, and not in her pen. The others stayed put, even though the gate was wide open. The wheel barrow was tipped over, shovels scattered, hay a mess, and goat poo all over the barn floor. Daughter forgot to put the latch in when she did the evening barn duties. Ha ha! What a mess that girl made in there too. As soon as I approached her, she ran into her goat pen. I'm sure she knew she wasn't supposed to be trapeze-ing all over the barn.
