This and That

Tomato sauce canned.  It's been time consuming this month, so hence the lack of blog posts.  Sigh.  It's been very tiring lately, as well as dealing with life in general.  Canning is nothing new to my blog, so new content is an issue too.  Unless we grow something new or can a new recipe.

I'm continuing to dehydrate more home grown lemon balm for the winter teas, drying more calendula for salves, and so forth.

Catastrophe has happened with my husband's cell phone while mowing.  He said he didn't realize it at first, but when he turned around and saw smoke, he new he ran over his cell phone.  More expenses have rolled in.  Life has a way of doing that once in a while.

I have not worked on my crochet book blanket in many months.  Canning season can do that too.  It can be very consuming, so much that you often feel left out of fall events.

We hear zero from our kids, so we are considering our holiday plans (or no plans) this time of year as well.  I love Christmas, and if feels very strange to not be preparing for it this year.  Kids today are influenced so much by social media, that they don't have what we had when we were growing up, and the results can be shocking.  Our kids don't have to love us, they don't have to like us, and they don't have to come visit us, but they do have to respect us.

I missed the deadline for the next writing contest, and have another one, but....one excuse after another.  I'm slowly chipping away at my work, but for some reason feel held back unwillingly.

Canning put me in a "funk" this year, and I don't know why, but it did.  I planted the tomatoes, so we will process them all, but there are days.  Life has a way of throwing all sorts of things at you all at once, so the swirling pit of anxiety/depression or whatever you want to call it, can fester up mini internal tornados.  In other words, I am not feeling like myself lately.

I see that the other new calendula plants are still growing, but no flowers yet.  I realized the other day, I am not sure I wrote down which one was planted where, so I'll have to compare the packet (which I did keep) with the flowers.  Oh, and I planted 4 types, with one being the regular (general) calendula seeds.

Oh I would be so lost if my children didn't visit me.
Canning is hard work. I am doing more freezing than canning this year, but it mainly with purchased veggies. Our weather has seriously stunted our normal yields.
Sorry that you are in a funk. Oh my on the cellphone. I have a old passport purse that I put my phone in when I mow, I hang the purse around my neck.

My daughter does not call very much also...it seems to be only when she want something...its disheartening. Children get so absorbed with their own lives they forget about us...of course on the flip side I have a sister in law who had to take a restraining order out to get a 35 year old abusive daughter out of her house and life. The daughter has never grown up and launched into a life of her own.
Carol, one of my kids got very angry at me for asking for a visit or even a conversation, so we don't reach out and wait for them to reach out to us. I get that they are building their own lives, but we are truly interested in their lives. We are however, disappointed to only be reached out to when they want or need something, which is usually money.
Anne in the kitchen, we are having to purchase some produce this year as well. It was definitely a late cold spring, followed by several heat waves etc. Yes, canning is very hard work for sure.
Far Side of Fifty, that is a very good idea. Thanks for sharing that. His phone has never fallen off in all these years.
Pat57, yes, there are both sides to this for sure. We are just very interested in their lives, and it doesn't seem to be the same for them. I feel like I was that way at their age too, and now I understand why my Mom wanted me to do quick visits whenever (and for whatever reasons) we or I were in town.

Yes, you could be writing about my life. You are not alone. Take care of yourself. Love yourself. Do things that make you happy.
Sharon, I cannot remember a year where I felt so burned out. I'm truly trying to change that back to "happy" again.

Chit Chat

The pickings are slim right now, but we'll take anything we are blessed with.  I made a salad and cleaned the beans.  The rain will give us more for a meal in a day or so.  The green beans are every so slowly coming on this season. I made a batch of homemade granola, and instead of my homemade vanilla extract, I used my homemade Christmas Spice Extract.  It smelled so good in the oven, and while cooling.   I picked some purslane, and am doing an experiment with it this time.  Update soon.   Chit Chat ©  August 2026 by Kristina at Pioneer Woman at Heart

I've Been MIA and Heat Wave

First day of July.  It's hot.   I'm definitely not entering a stage of boredom any day soon.  Although I've been doing a lot, it's been productive.  We are in the middle of the worst heat wave I can ever remember.  So humid, there is very little to no work being done in the gardens for the last few days.  Heat index has been up to 106 degrees, and nights did not get any cooler than about  77 degrees.  The heat wave will continue for the rest of the week.  No rain yet. I froze water in small bottles to keep the chickens water cold, and froze treats for them. I canned a small batch of reduced sugar peach jam (before the heat  wave).  I have to admit, it's been very nice to can for two people now.   Enjoyed the last of our asparagus harvest.  The last two stalks were harvested June 29th.  The longest asparagus season we've ever had.  They look light colored, but taking them out of the fridge, they quickly...

Reminders?

On the positive side (after the hot pepper debacle). . .                                                We are looking forward to creative healthy meals, derived from the garden and whatever is in abundance, or available.  The chickens helped supply this meal last year and was delicious. Beets roasted with onions and rosemary from the herb garden.  Also, a picture from previous garden years.  Oh, we put thyme on these too, and also from the herb garden. Not to forget those tomatoes and all the sauces made over the years.  That dish included asparagus from the garden, as well as oregano from the herb garden. Sometimes a roll down memory lane gives us the spark to keep gardening and planting.  Maybe.   Reminders?   ©  June 2026 by Kristina at Pioneer Woman at Heart
