From the Homesteading Journal . . .

(all the old roofing loaded up by my son and Hubby's brother-in-law)

. . . it took two days, but the leftover roofing was removed, and half of the new roofing was put on. Hubby miscalculated on his measurements and we need to do an exchange for longer roofing.

. . .we were blessed with enough cucumbers for me to can 7 more pints of bread and butter pickles. I purchased another bushel of corn and stocked that up in the freezer.  I also purchased 5 lbs. of beets, and added 1 pound from our own garden, and canned one batch of spiced beets.  And I purchased local peaches and canned 15 - 1/2 pints of peach jam. And that's not all.  I purchased 36 hot banana peppers and canned 4 quarts of Hot Pepper Mustard Sauce. I also canned 5 - 1/2 pints of Ruby-Red Grapefruit Jelly (another new recipe I wanted to try).

Pepper Mustard Sauce
36 banana peppers, ground (hot or mild)
6 c. sugar
1 qt. mustard
1 qt. white vinegar
Bring to a boil.

Mix together:
1 1/2 c. flour
1 1/4 c. water
1 Tbsp. salt

Add flour mixture to pepper mixture using a wire whisk while still boiling.  Boil for 5 minutes, stirring often.  Place in hot quart jars and process 5 minutes. Makes 4 quarts or 8 pints.

Note:  updated 8/18/16 - I weighed my banana peppers this time around, and 36 weighed just about 2 1/2 pounds.

. . . the last red hen died this week.  She was the last one of the group we started with, and for some reason, they were egg bound often.  So far, we're having good health from the other barred rocks and araucanas.

. . .have been working on more stitched cards for the last Farmer's Market in September.  Our sales are down by 50% this year from last.

. . . planted Nasturtiums around the squash this year, and have only seen about two squash bugs (even though the rain prevented us from bounty, the plants are still there half alive).  I will plant these flowers again next year, just to make sure it's not a fluke, and that they really do keep the bugs away.

Note: Due to the high amount of blog theft going on (feed scrapers), I have started to put in a page break, followed by "Read more."  They only difference for you as a follower, is you will need to click on it to read the entire post.  Sorry for any inconvenience.

Busy, busy! I thought of you when I just saw (and did a post) about free amazon kindle chicken books (free kindle app for pcs). I searched for "free homesteading" under kindle and found this-
Letters of a Woman Homesteader

You might like it, from early in the 1900's....

I think I have that book, and have just not read it yet. I better go look in my books and see.

Love all those jars of canned goods, they are beautiful! It looks like the new roofing is coming right along. I will be curious too see if the nasturtiums work again next year.

Apples and Tomatoes Oh My!

The early morning weather here has been downright chilly.  One morning it was 42 degrees.  Flower beds have been weeded.  The herb garden is next in line, but I do need to figure out what to do with all the rosemary plants I planted in the actual vegetable garden.  I have not mastered keeping them alive all winter indoors.  They will not survive the winter if left outside. Did any of my blog writing followers locate a better "blog" platform online?  Just curious if anyone is moving from blogger.

Under the Weather ~ What's Growing?

I have not been around in blogland much, due to being under the weather after I pushed myself way to far one day.  I have to remember we cannot do it all in one day.  Thank goodness for teas and tinctures, and healing foods (and rest).  We are feeling better. As for our blogs being used for advertising on many websites, and so forth (I can't see any other reason for the source of views: howstuffworks, dominospizza, mayoclinic {not the blog readers interested in my actual blog}) the numbers continue to climb.  I have not found a way to "opt" out either.  If any of you find a new way to avoid this, blog elsewhere, find a new platform etc, please be sure to share.   If your blog has ads, you are are not going to complain, ha ha!  You are probably making a bucko-bucks with all these visitors to your blog. Okay, back to the update post . . .

16 Weeks Until Christmas

It's not hard to believe that we are traveling closer to the winter holidays.  I'm trying to focus on enjoying every single day until then, but I am fitting in a few snippets of holiday preparing.  Christmas is my favorite holiday of the year.  It's hard to believe it's the last day of August. I have not yet gotten rid of the links to all the advertisers using my blog posts, but again, still working on it. However, my profile has gone from my blog, and while I am in settings, it is not able to add as a "gadget" to the blog.  Weird things are happening.   Google had a data breach recently as well, so gmail users were advised to change passwords.  Not sure what else is going on, but just in case you are wondering why my "profile" is not on my blog any longer.   Okay, back to the Christmas countdown post . . .
