Hearthside Cooking

A good friend and one of my daughter's participated in a Hearthside cooking class.  We were first "team Pastry" and started mixing a Dolly Madison Scripture Cake.  We were so happy to taste your cake, along with all the other items cooked/baked and prepared.  This was such a fun experience, and we now know how to cook over fire, or coals in a brazier (see below)

I found out these are very handy to cook on, and we cooked many of our recipes on these, including ice cream.  We used outdoor open fires to heat our water, and one fire for cooking the meats, and oyster soup.

We used kitchen gadgets from the 18th century, such as a grater to grate our whole nutmeg with (below)

And a hammer was used to crush up whole almonds. We get our hand choppers out at home everyday, and here I could have been using my simple hammer.

Our scripture cake turned out pretty good.    For this cake, the recipe is written using Bible verses.  For each item we needed to search the Bible, and locate what ingredient it was.  Measurements were given in the recipe.  It turned out pretty tasty.

hello Ms..Pioneer woman..I've cooked our dinner on our firepit and it was the most fun I've had in cookin' in decades!! Camping cooking is fun...I hope you don't mind..but I don't wear long dresses to cook in...pants or shorts is more my style....I don't know how in the world women did that! Mel's Cabin is rustic style and follows you.
