I was sending off a long email to a few folks this morning, and my phone rang.
It's time to order chicks.
I'll admit, I have not thought about it. I have thought about the garden, the seed ordering, new red raspberry plants, and even the goat coats that are not sewn up yet. I've even thought about the grape vine I want to plant.
I need to do a bit of pondering and figure out if we'll order new layers and/or meat chickens. It appears I have about a month to get my order in.
Yesterday I located another scholarship application for our 18 year-old. I tell ya' this is tough to do. I don't like to spend so many hours in front of the computer screen. Writing maybe, but using the internet is exhausting.
I just heard about a new ap that is being used to locate scholarships for kids.....I think it is called Scholy....anyway it supposed to have tons have scholarships in one place so that you can apply for many different kinds. Have fun planning! Nicole xo
ReplyDeleteI think that using the internet can just wear one's brain out - there is so much information that it is overwhelming! I hemmed and hawed about whether to raise meat birds this year, then had one of last year's chickens roasted. That decided it. What kind of chicks do you order?
ReplyDeleteSusan we ordered the cross breed last year (the kind that get fat and have to be moved around every day to keep them from breaking their legs). The year before, we bought a dual breed. Not sure of the names, but they did not get very big at all.

ReplyDeleteI took a year off from meat chicken raising last year & bought from friends who run a poultry business. It was nice to have less work, but waaaay more expensive in the end ($188 for fifteen chickens in the freezer) I'm getting the Frying Pan special from McMurray Hatchery this year, and even if I feed them all organic raiser feed, it won't cost me as much this year to raise 15 birds. As for new layers, I'm hatching eggs this year--it's a fun project, and any roosters will become freezer birds beyond the one I want to keep as flock manager. :)
ReplyDeleteWe are thinking about ordering meat birds as well. Just not sure where the hubbys job will take us. I have bees coming in April, will have to be home for sure by then!
ReplyDeleteCris, the kids have always wanted to hatch our own layers, but we just haven't done it. It sounds fun. That is a high price to buy those birds. Yikes.

You have lots to think about for the farm. We're not getting anymore chickens until we sort out all the house business.
